The Prophetic Purpose of Religious Education
Keynote Presenter: Rev. Nate Walker

Unitarian Universalist religious educators are on the front lines in growing ethical citizens for a global world. Religious educators prepare Unitarian Universalists to be the voice of conscience and actively respond to oppressive agendas. But UU religious educators also can help prepare the people in our congregations to be the ethical agenda-setters of our time.

When congregations develop religious education programs that cultivate the moral, faith, and intellectual development of learners across the lifespan, they promote religious literacy. Directors of Religious Education then help cultivate religious literacy by simultaneously developing participants’ Unitarian Universalist identity while exposing them to a variety of religious and multicultural sources. As a result, UUs are prepared to navigate a religiously diverse world and take a leading role in setting ethical agendas in our pluralist democracy. Unitarian Universalist religious educators are poised to lead with prophetic purpose and help co-create a new moral majority.

Join Rev. Nate Walker for an interactive workshop designed to envision future directions for religious education programs in our congregations and in our religious movement.

Nathan C. Walker is the former Director of Religious Education at the Fourth Universalist Society in the City of New York and the current minister of the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia. Nate is a certified public school teacher with three masters degrees in education, in addition to his Masters of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in religious education. He recently completed a fellowship at Harvard Divinity School and is currently a doctoral candidate at Teachers College Columbia University. He is the co-editor of “Whose God Rules? Is the United States a Secular Nation or a Theolegal Democracy?” (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011) with foreword by Tony Blair. For more details visit www.NateWalker.com.
